Wales, 1976: The Shirt That Changed the Look of International Football

There’s something wonderfully self-assured about the 1976 Admiral shirt.

That rich red, the oversized crest and, most of all, those yellow-and-green hourglass tramlines sweeping down either side.

It should, by rights, be far too much. Instead, it is magnificent.

At a time when international football shirts were still largely defined by simplicity, Admiral was beginning to think differently. Patterns were becoming bolder, colours more adventurous and football shirts were starting to become something more than just what players wore on the pitch. The Wales shirt arrived at exactly that moment, turning a simple red jersey into something dramatically recognisable.

Those hourglass tramlines would become inseparable from memories of Welsh football in the 1970s. Worn by a generation that included John Toshack, Leighton James and Joey Jones, the shirt became part of a changing era for Welsh football and for football shirts themselves.

There is also a wider story behind that distinctive hourglass pattern. Admiral had already experimented with the hourglass-style tramlines on Coventry City shirts in the mid-1970s, before the design found its way onto the Wales shirt and was later reimagined for Belgium's 1982 World Cup kit. What began as a bold piece of Admiral design became part of the visual language of an era.

And perhaps that's why the Wales shirt still feels so striking today. It sits at the point where football's old-school simplicity began to give way to the expressive, fashion-conscious shirt designs that would define the late 1970s and 1980s.

Nearly 50 years on, the design still makes you stop, and think 'that's a bit special'.

These colours and the iconic hourglass pattern are now available through Admiral Kitbuilder. Take the elements that made the 1976 Wales shirt so distinctive, experiment with colours, patterns and details, and create a design of your own.
