England vs Argentina: The Debut of England's Iconic Admiral Kit

Ahead of facing Argentina in the semi-finals, we look back at the match that marked the debut of one of England's most iconic Admiral home kits.

On 13 May 1980, England defeated Argentina 3-1 in front of 92,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium. While the result was memorable, the evening is perhaps best remembered as the debut of England's new Admiral home kit.

Featuring the signature red and blue trim and a smart V-neck collar, the shirt would go on to become one of the most recognisable England shirts. It would later be worn throughout the qualifying campaign for the 1982 FIFA World Cup and during the tournament itself in Spain.

England celebrated the shirt's debut with an impressive 3-1 victory. David Johnson scored twice before captain Kevin Keegan added England's third.

The match also introduced Wembley to one of football's greatest-ever players. At just 19 years old, Diego Maradona made his first appearance at the famous stadium.

Looking back on the match years later, Kevin Keegan described Maradona as a "genius" and named him one of the two greatest players he ever faced. After the final whistle, the two exchanged shirts, creating an iconic moment as Maradona left Wembley wearing England's newly debuted Admiral home shirt.

The 3-1 victory over Argentina marked the beginning of a shirt that would become one of the most iconic designs in England's football history.
