Bryan Robson: Fastest Goal Scorer in England World Cup History

Widely regarded as one of England's greatest ever midfielders, earning the nickname 'Captain Marvel', Bryan Robson cemented his place as one of football's most respected captains.

Robson's professional career began at West Bromwich Albion. Over the next few seasons, he established himself as one of the country's brightest young midfielders, leading to his transfer to Manchester United.

After arriving at Manchester United in 1981, he went on to captain the club for an incredible 13 years, the longest captaincy in Manchester United's history. He played a huge role in bringing success back to Old Trafford. Along the way, he lifted two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and the European Cup Winners' Cup, becoming one of the club's most influential players of his generation.

It wasn't just at club level where Robson made his mark. After making his England debut in 1980, he earned 90 caps and scored 26 goals. He captained England 65 times and represented his country at three World Cups, wearing the captain's armband on football's biggest stage throughout the 1980s.

His most iconic moment in an England shirt came during the opening match of the 1982 FIFA World Cup against France. Just 27 seconds after kick-off, Robson fired England into the lead with what was, at the time, the fastest goal in World Cup history. He added a second later in the match as England secured an impressive 3–1 victory, making it one of the standout performances of his international career.

Robson's record-breaking strike remained the fastest goal ever scored at a World Cup for two decades before being surpassed by Turkey's Hakan Şükür, who scored after just 11 seconds against South Korea in 2002.

More than four decades on from that unforgettable summer in Spain, his 27-second World Cup goal remains one of the most iconic moments in England's football history and a reminder of why Bryan Robson is still regarded as one of the nation's greatest captains.
