Belgium's World Cup Journey in Spain 82'

As Belgium prepare to face Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals, it's the perfect time to look back at one of the most iconic moments in the Red Devils' history.

Heading into the 1982 tournament in Spain, Belgium had already impressed by qualifying from a difficult group featuring France and the Republic of Ireland.

Belgium stepped onto the pitch wearing a vibrant red base and yellow hourglass detailing running across the shirt and shorts, the design captured the bold football shirt aesthetics of the early 1980s. By this point, Admiral's famous hourglass look had become a familiar sight across international football, but Belgium's version incorporated the Admiral logo within the yellow striping to create one of the era's most distinctive looks, this detail was present in both their red home kit, and white away kit.

Up against reigning world champions Argentina, led by a young Diego Maradona, Belgium were expected to start their tournament with defeat. Instead, they stunned the footballing world.

On 13 June 1982 at Barcelona's Camp Nou, forward Erwin Vandenbergh scored the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute, securing a famous 1-0 victory over the defending champions. It remains one of the most celebrated results in Belgian football history.

Belgium carried that momentum through the group stage, finishing top of their group and proving their victory over Argentina was deserved. While their World Cup journey would eventually come to an end in the second group phase, the memories of that opening-night shock and the iconic kit worn along the way have endured for more than four decades.
